I'd use a long grade eight bolt and locknut and make sure the threaded portion wasn't inside the tube. However.most say that the pin is stronger than the hitch itself. I did a search for this forum and found one really good thread. I would point out that you essentially would have to shear the 5/8 pin in two places at once for a complete failure. This has been discussed before here but quite some time ago. So wouldn't a person be better off with a grade 8 bolt then a crappy little pin that you don't know what it is? ![]() Posted 14:21 (#3421530 - in reply to #3421479) Subject: Re: Is the 5/8 pin the weak link on my pintle hitch 2" receiver? I would expect an un-threaded pin to be even stronger than a threaded bolt. Posted 14:42 (#3421557 - in reply to #3421503) Subject: RE: Is the 5/8 pin the weak link on my pintle hitch 2" receiver? Does anyone know the rating of that small pin and/or if a person can buy a heavy duty one? I haven't found anything with various searches on the internet. We have used the truck for moving implements and similar items but only at slow speeds. I know I could change the hook up on my truck but I have already installed a home made hitch that has a 2" receptacle. ![]() would you trust that small pin to carry the load? I don't plan on using my pickup for anything that heavy but would like to use the truck for those kind of jobs. ![]() Since the the trailer can potentially haul over 20K lbs. I went ahead and ordered a pintle hitch tube to install in both my pickup and truck. I bought a heavy duty pintle hitch trailer the other day that I can use either my pickup or semi to pull.
