The time it takes to get these results varies. A sample is taken from the nose or throat and the specimen is sent to a lab. This test checks if you have a current COVID-19 infection. Viral Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Testing It’s important to continue social distancing, hand washing and mask wearing. Remember, the virus can be spread even by asymptomatic people. If your symptoms worsen, contact your primary care physician and ask about PCR testing. Negative Result Next Steps: Even after a negative rapid test result, if you’re experiencing symptoms, have recently traveled or been exposed to someone with COVID-19, stay home and follow CDC guidance to avoid spreading potential illness to others.Regardless of whether or not you are experiencing symptoms, you may still be able to give the virus to others. Negative Result: You either DO NOT currently have an active COVID-19 infection or you DO have COVID-19, but were tested too early or late into the virus’ progression.Talk to your employer about your test results right away. You will be asked to wait on-site for your results. Rapid, point-of-care diagnostic tests use a sample from the nose or throat that can be analyzed at the doctor’s office or clinic where the sample is collected, and results may be available in minutes. Sometimes the result can be inconclusive, and we’ll need to redo the test. It is possible to get a false negative or false positive result. ***Please note: No tests are perfect and 100% accurate. The third test, the antibody test, is used to identify past infection. The rapid antigen test and Viral Polymerase Chain Test( PCR or “molecular test”) help to identify current infection.
